As “unprecedented” days-long heavy rains swept through various states in Malaysia, at least four people have perished and close to 41,000 have been evacuated, according to officials.
Videos from local news and social media posts in the impacted areas, primarily in the southern state of Johor near the neighbouring country of Singapore, showed photos of flooded roads, drowned automobiles, soaked homes, and rows of shuttered businesses.
An elderly couple who drowned and a guy whose car was washed away by floodwaters are among those who have died since Wednesday.
Over 41,000 people, largely from Johor but also from six other states, have been relocated to schools and community centres where they were given food, water, and clothing.
The annual monsoon season, which started in November, is causing Malaysia to experience unprecedented continuous torrential rain.
