Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated RM30mil for the renovation and upgrade of at least 12 markets, food complexes and hawker sites this year, says mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.

“In 2023 alone, 15 such projects were completed while 16 will be completed this year,” he said, adding that the upgrades were being done throughout the island.

“The latest project to be completed is the Padang Brown Food Complex on Anson Road, which has 53 stalls.

“This project, which began in August last year and was completed in March, cost RM389,195 to instal an additional roof.

“In 2021, we also upgraded the piping system here at a cost of more than RM95,000.”

Rajendran said the installation of an additional roof was an initiative by MBPP to enhance the infrastructure at Padang Brown Food Complex, thereby improving hawkers’ and customers’ comfort.

He was speaking to reporters after a ceremony to mark the project’s completion.

The event was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, state local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, MBPP secretary Cheong Chee Hong, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and MBPP councillors Tan Soo Siang and Nicholas Theng.
