Penang to face 2-day water cut in April for pipeline upgrade

Four key industrial areas in Penang—Bayan Lepas, Perai, Bukit Minyak, and Batu Kawan—will experience a 48-hour water supply disruption from 25 April (10:00pm) to 27 April (10:00pm). The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) announced that approximately 337,000 consumers, including industrial users, will be affected by the scheduled outage.

The disruption is necessary to facilitate the final connection of the RM8.7 million Sungai Perai crossing pipeline (SP-RCP) at Ampang Jajar, Seberang Perai Tengah. Once completed, the 1.35-meter SP-RCP will enhance water supply efficiency, supporting a maximum pumping capacity of 247 megaliters per day (MLD). This upgrade will enable safer and more reliable water distribution from the Sungai Dua treatment plant to meet growing demand on Penang Island and the mainland.

As of February 1, the pipeline project was 70% complete and on schedule. PBAPP assured consumers that detailed maps of affected areas, site updates, and water storage reminders will be provided closer to the disruption date. The exact timing of the outage will depend on the completion of preparatory works.

Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for the temporary inconvenience, as the upgrade aims to secure Penang’s long-term water supply needs.
