The Penang State Government has unveiled plans to develop a state-of-the-art “Sport City” near the State Stadium in Batu Kawan. The initiative aims to elevate the quality of life for Penang residents and position the state as a premier regional hub for prestigious sports events.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the project during the official opening of the Nibong Tebal Arena on Saturday. He revealed that the administration is inviting proposals through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, with a deadline in April 2025.

“The future of Penang lies in Seberang Perai, and we have consistently prioritized its development. After establishing SP Arena in Seberang Jaya and Butterworth Arena in Northern Seberang Perai, it is only fitting for Nibong Tebal to have its own arena,” Chow stated.

The proposed Sport City in Batu Kawan will feature an integrated sports ecosystem, including a racing circuit, an aquatic center, a sports academy, and commercial facilities. Private investors are encouraged to participate in this landmark project, which aligns with the state’s long-term vision for growth.

During the launch, Chow also suggested that the Penang Stadium Corporation explore expanding pickleball courts statewide, citing the sport’s growing international popularity.

The newly opened Nibong Tebal Arena is a versatile multi-purpose hall equipped with six badminton courts and space for 72 dining tables, designed to cater to the community’s recreational and social needs. Costing approximately RM10 million, it was built on the former Public Works Department quarters and stands as a testament to the state government’s commitment to developing Seberang Perai.

State Youth, Sports, and Health Committee Chairman Daniel Gooh highlighted the arena’s potential to attract national and international events, further enhancing Penang’s appeal as a sports destination.
