Fire breaks out at a condominium construction site in Jelutong

A construction site in Jelutong became the scene of a dramatic rescue this morning after a fire forced workers to flee for their lives. The incident, first reported by Sin Chew Daily, occurred at approximately 8am on Jalan Tengku, where a 29-story condominium block with 161 units is under construction.

The fire started in the first-floor parking area, sending workers scrambling to escape. Some narrowly fled via external ledges, while others moved upward to avoid the intense flames. Thirteen foreign workers became trapped on the sixth floor, unable to descend due to the spreading fire.

The site manager noted that it was unclear how many workers were in the parking area at the time of the fire. Reports indicated that more workers might have been stranded on upper floors above the parking area.

Firefighters arrived swiftly, bringing oxygen tanks to navigate the smoke-filled building. After gaining control of the fire, they initiated a search and rescue operation. The 13 trapped workers were found on the sixth floor, all unharmed, and were safely escorted out by the firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and authorities are working to determine if safety protocols were adequately followed.
