Exco man clarifies land allocation near Gurney Bay

The land earmarked for the hotel and condominium project is not included in the Gurney Bay component projects.

Penang Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye clarified that two parcels of government reserve land, spanning 21 acres (opposite Gurney Plaza) and seven acres (near the future Gurney Bay hawker centre), have been apportioned and are distinct from the Gurney Bay development.

“The mixed-use development near Gurney Bay, situated on government reserve land (a portion of 21 acres opposite Gurney Plaza), is not affiliated with the Gurney Bay project. This development, comprising a hotel and residential units, is undertaken by a developer who acquired the land from the Penang government as a land replacement for the three paired roads project currently underway,” he explained during a media conference in Komtar today.

H’ng said the state government was still committed to providing the components of Gurney Bay as planned.

The Gurney Bay development project is a Penang government initiative to provide a public recreation park and other facilities. The Gurney Bay has been handed over to the state government as a component under the Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2 (STP2) reclamation project.

“The Gurney Bay, spanning 101 acres, will be developed in two phases.

“Phase One (27 acres of land) has been fully developed and was open to the public on Feb 4.

“Development works for Phase Two (74 acres of land) has reached 48% and is expected to be completed in the year 2025,” he said.

Also present was Penang Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) general manager Datin S. Bharathi.
