KUALA LUMPUR: Citaglobal Bhd and Petronas Global Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd (PGTS) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic collaboration in various renewable energy (RE) technologies and applications. The agreement was signed during the Energy Asia conference by Citaglobal’s executive chairman and president, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, and PGTS’s chief executive officer, Annaliz Abu Bakar.

PGTS, a wholly owned subsidiary of the state-owned Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), offers technology products, technical services, project management, and engineering solutions. The collaboration between Citaglobal and Petronas will focus on RE technologies and applications, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), biogas engines, biomass engineering, waste-to-energy (WTE), heat-to-energy (HTE), and carbon capture and utilization (CCU).

The MOU outlines four areas of collaboration. Firstly, Citaglobal’s subsidiary, Citaglobal Genetec BESS Sdn Bhd (CG BESS), will work on the development and implementation of BESS applications and projects, utilizing their MYBESS system. This includes installing BESS to enhance technology advancement and generate green electricity, particularly by deploying 246kWh of MYBESS for Petronas’ Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy (CEFORE). Additionally, a joint feasibility study will be conducted to scale up BESS technology solutions across Petronas’ existing and future facilities.

Secondly, the MOU involves collaboration in the area of biogas, including a joint feasibility study to recover flare gas and explore the use of gas engines for other gases such as hydrogen.

The third area of collaboration focuses on joint feasibility studies for the application of WTE and HTE in Petronas plants.

Lastly, a joint feasibility study will be conducted for CCU initiatives in Petronas plants.

Citaglobal and Petronas will also work together to introduce technology advancements in material-based formulations like graphene and energy management systems.

If both parties agree to implement any of the collaborative activities, they will be carried out under a separate definitive agreement.

The MOU is effective from June 27, 2023, and will remain in force for a period of two years. Norza expressed confidence in Citaglobal’s ability to lead in the BESS sector and emphasized the importance of BESS as a component of the green energy mix. He believes that working together with Petronas will accelerate the adoption of renewables and make the transition to a greener Malaysia more efficient.
